Cutting Rusted Hardware
Rusty or corroded hardware can be a challenge work with. Try a Dremel tool next time you come across a rusty situation in which standard tools can't get the job done.
For this project we'll be using a Dremel 3000 tool with a shield attachment model A550 and EZ lock mandrel #EZ402 and an EZ Lock Cut-Off Wheel #EZ456. This project can be
completed using any Dremel rotary told that works with all standard attachments.
Corrosion has left the hanger bolts seized on the pipes we'd like to remove. We will be cutting the hangers using a rotary tool, the shield attachment to flex a spark and some debris generated by cutting from the person doing the cutting, and for many potentially sensitive areas around the cut. Cutting wheels wear during this work, so have several wheels on hand if you plan on doing any extensive cutting. The shield will help protect your hands from sparks and debris but a pair of gloves should be warned to protect against sharp metal edges.
Consider the right angle attachment for deeper and straighter cuts and threaded rod if you are working and less sensitive areas.
Here are some additional thoughts on cutting rusted hardware. Make a second cut when necessary to clean up rough edges. Take all necessary ladder and work safety precautions when working overhead.
